Arsenal Transfers: Why are we no longer looking at Clint Dempsey?

At the start of the summer transfer window, Arsenal was heavily linked with Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey. The rumors have sort of died down now but I wondered if we are letting a bargain slip from our hands in these last few days before the close of the transfer window.

The situation with Dempsey and his club is very clear. The player wants to leave and the club is willing to sell at a fair price. The price which was quoted at the start of the summer window was in the high eight figures but apparently Fulham is so desperate to move the player that they are willing to accept an offer in the region of £8 million. Although he is already 29 years old, but getting a proven Premiership player and goal scorer at this price will be an absolutely bargain.

As the new strikers brought in by Arsene Wenger need some time to get up to speed, it would be good to have a player that can get us the goals on a regular basis. Last year, Dempsey was one of the more prolific scorers in the Premiership, netting 17 League goals for the season. Mind you, getting 17 goals for a team like Fulham with no great midfield support is a great achievement. Imagine what he can do with the assist provided by the likes of Cazorla, Podolski and Wilshere. Previously, we missed out on Nuri Sahin but we can make up for it with Clint Dempsey. He can play in the hole behind Giroud or lead the attack when the Frenchman in not available. In fact, I have even seen him play on the wings for Fulham. Isn’t this kind of versatility that endears players to Arsene Wenger. Well, Dempsey is certainly one for the taking here.

There is not much time left to do a deal with Fulham for Dempsey and we would not be the only ones looking to sign him. Liverpool is interested and there are reports that Sunderland is already talking to the club and player. I am sure Dempsey would prefer to come to a club like Arsenal and participate in the Champions League so what are we waiting for?

Probably because he doesn’t fit our style of football.

I would happily take him as a “scraping of the barrel” replacement for Theo, as I believe he is a better player/more productive, but there are many wide midfielders who are far superior.
