It was another cracker of a London derby as Arsenal again hit five goals past Tottenham Hotspurs at the Emirates Stadium. A more pleasant surprise for the Gunners is that the five goals were scored by five different players highlighting the quality in Arsenal offensive department, something which has been missing for the past month or so. Mertersacker, Podolski, Giroud, Cazorla and Walcott were on the scoresheet in the match which could have gone so wrong for Arsenal.
Spurs took an early lead through Emmanuel Adebayor after some dreadful defending from the Gunners, in particular Per Mertersacker who got completely fooled by the run of Jermaine Defoe. However the turning point of the match came midway into the first half, as Adebayor was rightfully sent off for a reckless challenge on Santi Cazorla. Having watched the replay a couple of times, it was a very bad challenge which could have cause major damage to Cazorla. The sickening thing is that the Spurs players especially Gallas kept arguing with the referee about the decision. If I were the referee, I would have just sent Gallas off for dissent.
After the sending off, Arsenal took control of the match and got the equalizer with a rare goal for Mertersacker. The Gunners then added a couple more goals through Podolski and Giroud and were well in control going into half time.
In the second half, Spurs gave the guys a hard time as they played their heart out but it was always an uphill battle with ten men against Arsenal. The Gunners went further ahead through Cazorla before Bale hit one back for the opposition. There was a brief moment of anxiety for the Arsenal fans as Bale nearly got Spurs back to 4-3 but his shot just went wide of the post. That was probably the last serious attempt they had as Walcott round off the night while Arsenal’s fifth.
Truth be told, it was a game which could have gone pear shaped for Arsenal but a moment of madness from Adebayor changed everything. Maybe the pressure of performing at the Emirates got to him but whatever the case, we thank him for the gift. As I said before the match, a result like this is the ideal tonic to get our season back on track. With the attacking talent we have, I am sure we can repeat such performances over and over again.
